Ghost Bike Memorial Stolen

Ghost Bike Memorial Stolen

With deep regret, we must report that our first Ghost Bike installation (corner of Compadre & Ramon Rd.) has been stolen. We are working with the Palm Springs Police Department and an investigation is in progress.

Here’s the PSPD’s announcement of the theft released on Facebook, Thursday, April 13 2023 10:18am:

“We express our deep frustration and disappointment regarding the theft of a bicycle donated by the Palm Springs Police Department to Volunteer Palm Springs.

Over the past several years, we have collaborated with this organization to promote traffic safety, specifically focusing on pedestrians and cyclists. The stolen bicycle was dedicated to the PS Cares outreach program, which is a community-based education and public safety initiative designed to create a safer environment through the Blink for Safety and Ghost Bikes campaigns.

The stolen bicycle was dipped in white paint and stripped of all working parts had been displayed at the intersection of Compadre Road and Ramon Road to honor the memory of an individual who lost their life due to a vehicle/bicycle accident. The fact that this bike was stolen is a blatant disregard for the memory of the individual it was intended to honor and the community that came together to make this tribute possible.

We urge anyone with information about the theft to come forward and assist in our efforts to identify the suspect. We would like to recover the bicycle so that it can be returned to our partners at Volunteer Palm Springs. Please contact the non-emergency dispatch line if you have any information 760-327-1441.”

While saddened by the theft, Volunteer Palm Springs and PS Cares remain committed to hosting Ghost Bike memorials in our community to honor cyclists whose lives have sadly been lost. Thank you to everyone for your comments, we genuinely appreciate your support.
